Electronic Protection

We live in a day and age when our homes have multiple electronics in them.  Most Americans have multiple appliances, televisions, radios, computers, modems, printers, and the list continues.  In order to prolong the life of these items and provide the best protection for them, it is important to purchase a high-quality surge protector for them.  A surge protector is a device specifically designed to protect electronics during a power surge.

A power surge is described as a “spike” in the electrical current of your home.  The spike usually occurs extremely quickly, but always carries a possibility of damage to your appliances and electronics.  A power surge can be caused by a number of sources.  Lightning is one cause of a power surge, and it can also be a source of some of the strongest surges known.  Another cause of a power surge is when large appliances, such as dishwashers or air conditioners, turn on and off and a power surge can be formed.  Sometimes, a power surge can also be formed when the electric company is switching grids.  There is no foolproof way to prevent all power surges; however, there are steps you can take to help protect your home when a power surge does occur.

There are different types of surge protectors available to consumers.  Whole house surge protectors are available, as well as singular devices such as power strips with built-in surge protection.  Furthermore, one simple suggestion that is effective in protecting your appliances and electronics is to unplug items that are not in use.  While this method will work with some items in your home, it may not be practical to unplug everything when you’re not using it; hence the need for surge protection.

Whole house surge protection is a very good option, if you wish to spend a little bit of money up-front, in order to provide a safe-surge environment for your entire home.  A whole house protector will prevent a power surge from ever entering your home.  These protectors will need to be installed into your electrical box and you will need a licensed electrician to install it.  While a house surge protector will prevent surges from entering your home from any outside source, it will not prevent “internal” surges from appliances or electronics located inside your home; however, a full home protector is the best solution for overall, complete protection.  This choice is the one that is most highly recommended by homebuilders and electricians.

Another good choice for protecting your home and household items from power surges is the use of singular surge protectors.  Many power strips provide a surge protector in them; however, not all of them do.  Surge protector power strips are available at home supply stores, drug stores, and even some grocery stores sell them.  Do your research carefully when purchasing a power strip with surge protection, as there are many different options of power strips available.  Once you decide on the right power strip with surge protection that you need, it does provide you with a calming peace of mind to know your home and appliances or electronics are protected and that you are providing a safe environment.

As you well know, power surges can affect any home at any time, and it is important to make the best choices for your situation.  It’s a good idea to investigate your options and decide which path is best for you.
